Sir,
With reference to your telegram of
.the 16th. ultimo in which you request me to give Mr. Mesa Consul-General for Peru, every assistance which I am le- gally able to do towards recovering from Mr. Grant Smith certain property alleged to belong to the Peruvian Govern-
ment, but which Mr. Smith claims as his own, I have the
honour to inform you that, there is at present a case pend-
ing in the lay courts of this Colony between the Govern-
ment of Peru and Mr. Grant Smith. The Attorney General
has had an interview with Mr. Smith's solicitors on the
case, and I am advised by him that this Government can-
not interfere in the matter.
